School Mission

Rumsey Hall School is committed to a whole-child approach to education and believes that teaching academics and teaching an attitude of mind are of equal importance. The School emphasizes effort as a criterion for success and is dedicated to helping each child develop toward his or her maximum stature as an educated person, a successful member of a family, and a contributing member of a community.

Making the decision to send your child to junior boarding school is a big one. What’s made it feel right for us is the confidence our daughter has gained. She’s comfortable approaching teachers, coaches, and dorm parents, advocating for herself, and trying things we never imagined she would. That confidence will carry her wherever she goes next.”

Nestled in the scenic Litchfield Hills of Northwest Connecticut, our Washington Depot campus spans 300+ acres and features 32 iconic white buildings, including a newly built academic center, library, innovation center, dining hall, and nine dormitories. Artists and athletes thrive with fine and performing arts spaces, seven athletic fields, an ice rink, indoor turf, two gymnasiums, an indoor rock climbing wall, indoor crew tanks, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, fitness center, and mountain biking trails.

Rumsey’s Upper School offers a dynamic learning experience for students in Grades 6 through 9. As a junior boarding and day school, it provides a supportive, family environment where students are known, challenged, and encouraged to grow intellectually and personally. Small class sizes, expert faculty, and a strong emphasis on effort create an environment where students build the foundation for a lifetime of learning and growth.

Athletics are an essential part of our whole-child approach. Students develop lasting skills and passion for a variety of sports by participating in all three athletic seasons. We support all levels of play with 31 competitive and 11 non-competitive teams. Our playing fields and courts are not only a place to compete, but a place to grow, build resilience, and learn the rewards of teamwork. The Blue Dog Spirit is defined by perseverance and the relationships built between teammates and coaches.

The arts play a meaningful role at Rumsey Hall, giving students opportunities to explore creativity, build confidence, and collaborate. Students express themselves through music, drama, and visual arts. In the Upper School, they participate in ensembles, theater productions, and a variety of studio electives. These offerings develop skill and a deeper understanding of the creative process.

These courses are designed for students eager to pursue personal passions while building advanced skills under the mentorship of experienced faculty. Through workshops, and hands-on projects, students acquire real-world knowledge extending beyond the classroom. Rumsey offers Makerspace Design, Civics & Current Events, Social and Community Leadership, and Fine Arts Studies. Each culminates in a meaningful capstone project, giving students the chance to synthesize and present what they’ve learned.

Our Summer Camp invites children ages 3–10 to unplug, make friends, and discover new interests through outdoor adventures, sports, art, robotics, and more. Guided by Rumsey’s experienced faculty and counselors, campers thrive in a supportive environment that encourages curiosity, confidence, and teamwork. With access to Rumsey’s athletic fields, art studios, performance spaces, and natural trails, each day offers opportunities to learn, play, and grow in a place that feels like home.
