How to Apply to a Junior Boarding School

The junior boarding school application process is designed to be thoughtful and student-centered. While each JBSA member school maintains its own individual admissions process, most share a common framework that families can prepare for well in advance.

Understanding the Common Application Tools

EMA (Enrollment Management Association) Application. Most JBSA member schools participate in the EMA platform, which allows families to submit a single application – including student and parent questionnaires, transcripts, and teacher recommendations – to multiple schools simultaneously. Creating an EMA account early in the process streamlines the experience significantly.
A Typical Application Timeline:

Spring/Summer (Year Prior): Begin school research, attend JBSA events and regional fairs, request viewbooks, and schedule campus visits.

Fall: Register for and take the SSAT; request teacher recommendations; complete school visits and student interviews.

Winter (January – February): Submit applications. Most JBSA schools have rolling admissions or a primary deadline in late January or February.

March: Receive admission decisions. Enrollment contracts are typically due in April.

Tips for a Strong Application

Choose teacher recommenders who know your child well – academically and personally.

Prepare your student for their on-campus interview with honest, reflective conversation rather than scripted answers.

Allow your child to take ownership of parts of the process – it is great early practice in self-advocacy.

Reach out directly to the admissions office at any of our member schools – they are eager to guide your family through every step.
